How to keep kids engaged and active when school is not in session? The Delta Community Library has sought to answer this question each summer. This year the staff was inspired by the theme “Plant a Seed, Read,” to create a variety of summer activities for the community’s youth.
Three weeks of day camps were held at the community center. The first week was for grades six through eight. Many of these campers had so much fun that they returned to help with the next group of kids grades three to five. Finally, the youngest group, grades K to two, had their week of fun. The groups, which totaled 85 kids in all, created crafts, planted raised beds, explored the River Walk Trail, played games, read stories, and much more.
In addition to these camps, a summer-long activity challenge kept 188 youth engaged over the break. They were able to choose from a variety of activities to fill up their challenge logs including reading many different kinds of books, walking, caring for animals, helping others, learning new things, doing chores, building things, and more. These activities earned raffle tickets, creature cards, and prize wheel spins for the participants.
On Friday, September 11, the wrap party was held with 28 attendees at the library. Games, snacks, and, most important of all, the raffle drawings for the 15 prizes for which there were hundreds of raffle tickets. It was a great success measured by parents who were pleased with the activity level of their children and the library staff who were kept busy with processing all of the many challenge sheets. The whole program was made possible by funding from the Manh Choh Community Fund, the Delta Library Association, the Country Store, and the Buffalo Drive-in. One parent’s parting comment as she left the party summed it all up: ”I just love our library and the programs it offers.”
Lucky raffle winner for a Lego jeep set and the bicycle was Ethan Holbrook. The mini karaoke went to Clarissa Perez, and headphones to Josh Nymeyer and Cole Martin. Minecraft gift card went to Forrest Clasr, a soccer ball to Karissa Holbrook, walkie talkies to Hannah Swearingen, Ally Elsberry took home a Fred Meyer gift card, Theo Brand a squirt gun set, McKenna Pease-Madore a Michael’s gift card, and Caleb Doroshenko won a LEGO Tarantula set.
