The Delta Junior High cross-country runners showed they were no slouches on the Birch Hill Trail in Fairbanks September 9. They managed to secure a few spots on the podium and brought home a few ribbons.
Marissa Leija was first on the course, placing 5th among the sixth graders. The seventh grade girls showed their prowess on the trail with Sofia Sicotorski running her way to first place, followed by Viktoria Sidorova, who garnered 4th place, and Julia Sicotorschi running to 6th place. Isaac Skywatcher, running with the eighth grade boys, crossed the line for a second place finish.
“Even with challenging weather conditions and a new course that we did not have a chance to preview, everyone on our team ran with strength and confidence,” stated coach Jessica Fellman. “I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them for having the courage to step up to the starting line, for the support they showed their teammates during the races, and for having the strength to see their own races through all the way to the finish line.”
The Grizzlies will host their one and only home (and final) meet this Saturday at the Liewer-Olmstead trail. The race starts at 10 a.m. Come out, cheer them on, then head on over to the River Walk Trail for their Open House. Make a day of it in Alaska’s great outdoors.
