One hundred and thirty runners from 10 Alaska high schools showed up Saturday, September 5, for Delta High’s annual cross-country invitational meet. North Pole High topped the list, sending 35 Patriots ready to take to the trail. Five Huskies dressed out, with one runner sidelined with an injury and another having a prior commitment.
The weather held with clearing skies, no rain, and minimal wind. Delta Huskies’ relatively small running field garnered them no ribbons, but all three completed the race that included a run up the "Little Belly Acher,” a hill notorious for its steep grade and continual incline.
“It’s a young team,” commented former coach Andrey Ionashku. “We had a large group of seniors graduate last year and are basically starting fresh.”
The Delta High team is coached by Traci Perkins, who organized and planned the meet with help from Ionashku.
